Increased Fines for Violations

One of the appeals to Point O’Woods is the sense of safety and security in the community. The Board of Governors is especially concerned about the safety and security of our homeowners, families, guests and their property.

New resident stickers with the centennial logo were distributed this year to distinguish them from parking stickers that have a red ‘P’ on them. This will help the security staff in identifying cars entering as having the right to enter Point O’Woods and keep the traffic moving. Please affix the sticker on the lower left of your windshield and you will be waved through after you stop at the stop sign.

There is a new security contractor this year and they have been instructed to ensure that all cars stop at the stop sign before proceeding.

For the safety of all, you must stop at the stop sign. Signs have been posted as you enter the tunnel advising that stopping ahead is required. Fines for certain violations have been increased to $100:

  • Title IV, Chapter 2, Section 5 (operator failure to give name and show or surrender license)
  • Title IV, Chapter 2, Section 8 (disobeying orders of an officer),
  • Title IV, Chapter 2, Section 24 (failure to stop at a stop sign)

Dear POW Friends and Fireworks Aficionados

In just about six weeks we will hold our Centennial Celebration complete with a fireworks display from the water on Saturday, July 27th. We’ve contracted with Atlas PyroVision, New England’s largest fireworks company, to put on a fabulous show for us.

Our Board of Governors has allocated the entire budget for the show; $18,000 plus the cost of police and fire protection. I’ve been approached my many friends asking if they could make a personal contribution to assist in making the show even better. I’m happy to report that YES, all of us can do just that!

If you would like to make a donation, in any amount, please send your check to:

Point O’Woods Assoc.

PO Box 152

South Lyme, CT 06376

Please write “Fireworks” in the memo line!

At the end of June 100% of the proceeds collected will be used to buy more shells for the show. So more money equals more shells equals more intensity!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks for your support and Happy 100 Years!

Acts of Nuisance / Hammer Law

(June 25 through Labor Day)

There shall be no construction work performed inside or outside of a dwelling after June 24 through Labor Day each year. If a property owner experiences an emergency, the Hammer Law Extension Request Form is required and can be found on the website under Security:  Hammer Law Extension Request. The property owner (not construction provider) should contact any member of the Board or The Association’s office to alert them of the impending request.  The Board may provide a short, timely authorization for construction or repair to be completed “provided the property owner shows an emergency condition exists”.

All golf carts must be registered by June 24th or are subject to a $100 fine.

All cars parked in the beach parking lot must display a current parking pass or are subject to a $25.00 fine.  Resident permit does not allow you to park in the beach parking lot.

Fines and exemptions are established by the Board of Governors. No fine will exceed $250.00 per violation.

New Waste Removal and Recycling Services starting July 1, 2019

A contract has been signed with CWPM Waste Removal and Recycling Services to provide collection services for trash and recycling beginning July 1, 2019.

Special thanks to Selectman Chris Kerr, Board of Finance member David Kelsey and our current provider, Gary Yuknat (Old Lyme Sanitation) for their hard work in developing an RFP, reviewing the bids received and their input on the contract that was signed.

The big news is that ALL RESIDENTS will now have weekly pickup of both trash AND recycling, beginning July 1, 2019.

It is important to note that in the past, beach areas had trash pickup twice weekly from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but that will no longer be the case.

Trash pickup for the entire town will be once weekly throughout the year.

Residents should also be aware that the State of CT is pushing hard for compliance on recycling, and we have gotten several notices from our recycling vendor, Willimantic Waste, pointing out that there are contaminants in the recycling waste they receive from our town. This translates into increased cost to the town, resulting in increased taxes.

You may have seen our efforts in the Events magazine, News and Announcements, and even in the most recent Annual report to remind our residents on “What’s In, What’s Out”.  (see document below)

This is the official list from the State of CT, and their graphic provides an easy reference for everyone about recycling and WHAT to recycle. Please post this handout for all in your family to see, and remind everyone that recycling materials must be clean. We appreciate your efforts on this behalf, and are sure that you will appreciate the savings in cost!

Happy Spring —

Boat Basin Slip Renters

Boat basin slip rental agreements for the 2019 season will be mailed out soon and are due back to the POW Administration Office by March 15, 2019 with rental payment.

There has been no increase in slip rental fees, however we are instituting a new procedure that will help keep the Point O’Woods costs down. We’ve found that boats that have been left in the boat basin during periods of harsh weather are causing damage to the poles. Replacing these poles is costly and time consuming requiring the hiring of heavy equipment.

Since this is a problem mostly in September and October, you are being instructed to remove your boat during harsh weather. To assist you with this we have developed an email distribution list of those authorized to have boats in the boat basin.  After mid-September it will be used to notify boat owners of approaching poor weather conditions. We also recommend that boat owners remove their boats when they are absent from Point O’Woods to avoid damage to the boat basin equipment or neighboring boats.

You will be responsible for the cost of pole replacement if, after being notified by email of approaching bad weather, you do not remove your boat and your boat damages the poles. This could be as much as $300-$400.
